/no-tih-fih-KAY-shun SEN-tur/ · noun · SYSTEM pattern · #084
The list of notifications you pull down from the top of an iPhone, grouped by app, newest first. Anything you did not deal with on arrival waits here until you clear it.

Also called: notification centre, iPhone notifications list, notification history.
You might call it
- “the swipe down notifications on iPhone”
- “where old notifications go on iPhone”
- “the list of notifications at the top of the screen”
- “notification history on iPhone”
- “the notifications list on the Lock Screen”
…its name is Notification Center.
Common questions
Where is notification history on iPhone?
In Notification Center. Swipe down from the top middle of the screen, or swipe up on the Lock Screen, to see notifications you have not cleared, grouped by app. Once you clear a notification it is gone — iPhone does not keep a separate notification log.
Notification Center vs notification shade: what is the difference?
Same idea on different systems. Notification Center is Apple’s name on iPhone, iPad and Mac. On Android the pull-down list is called the notification shade (Samsung: the notification panel), and on most phones it also carries the Quick Settings toggles.
In code
| iOS (UserNotifications) | UNUserNotificationCenter UNMutableNotificationContent |
|---|---|
| Android | NotificationCompat.Builder NotificationManagerCompat |
| Flutter | No built-in API — apps use a plugin such as flutter_local_notifications |
| Web | Notification PushManager |

Add notifications to this app that respect Notification Center: ask for permission only after the user does something that clearly benefits from alerts, group notifications by conversation or topic, keep each to a short title and one useful line, and open the exact related screen when tapped. Remove notifications that are no longer relevant, and let users choose which kinds they get in the app’s own settings.
